The Name Says it All
Date Movie (2006, PG-13)

Reviewed by Heather Maki.

Date Movie starts with plump Julia Jones romping around her city, trying to find herself a man. The hilarious dance Julia performs to "Milkshake" by Kelis left the entire audience laughing. When Julia has no luck finding a man, she returns to waitress at her father's Greek restaurant. Julia's father, Frank Jones, encourages Julia to find a man who is everything she is—Greek, black, and Jewish. Although they aimed for comedy by playing up the odd combination of heritage, laughs were on hold for most of this section of the movie.

Later while Julia is serving coffee to the diners at her father's restaurant, she meets the man of her dreams, Grant Funkyerdoder. In desperation to catch him, she goes to see "Hitch" who is supposed to be the man responsible for many of Hollywood's most famous couples. At first he refuses to help her, but he finally gives in and gives Julia a slimming makeover.

The mini-sized Julia wins a spot on a show like The Bachelor and ends up winning a date with the man of her dreams. He remembers her from the restaurant, except now she's about 10 sizes smaller. The rest of the movie covers Julia and Grant's relationship, including meeting each other's parents. This was a play on the Ben Stiller movies, but some scenes were a little too close to the original, losing their humor.

Overall, Date Movie is a great movie to watch with friends or a special someone. It's a good parody of other date movies Hollywood has released in the last couple of years. My rating is 6.5 out of 10…funny, but not hilarious.

Think About It

  • Is there any way we can relate God helping us in everyday life to the makeover Julia experienced? How does God help make over our own lives?
  • Julia believed in true love. How could her idea of true love relate to our love for God and God's love for us?
