Can't Fly from Bird Flu
by Eric Maki

(ABC News, March 13, 2006)

Officials are warning U.S. citizens that the deadly bird flu is fast approaching our coasts, and that we need to be prepared.

Even though the current strain of the bird flu being tracked (H5N1) has been blamed for less than 100 deaths worldwide, the worst-case scenario projections show that approximately half of the country could contract the flu within three months if there was an outbreak on an East coast farm.

The bird flu is currently being tracked toward Siberia and Alaska by the U.S. Spy Satellite network. When infected flocks of wild birds fly over poultry farms, their waste can spread bird flu to chickens.

Even though every possible precaution is being taken to keep Americans safe, including full hospital dress at chicken farms, Michael Leavitt, Secretary of Health and Human Services, is asking all citizens to keep canned tuna and powered milk on hand for the time being.

Will the bird flu cause a pandemic, or are we worrying over nothing? Only time will tell.

Think About It

  • How can we respond to those who need help controlling the bird flu?
  • Why do bad things happen in this world?
  • What is God's response to God's people in times of crisis?
